The grandest building of them all is of course the incomparable Taj Mahal, an immense mausoleum of white marble built in Agra in the 1600s. The Mughal emperor Shah Jahan built it in memory of his favourite wife. It is the jewel of Muslim art and one of the most prized World Heritage sites.
As you walk in through the gates, you cannot help but gasp. The grounds are pristine and the sense of serenity you feel is quite extraordinary. I have visited twice and this feeling was with me both times. It is imperative to have a guide to share the beautiful story of how this came to be.
